Wait a minute...

The above poll results from the Community tab on my YouTube channel seem pretty dang conclusive to me.  So how come whenever I dislike absolutely anything in a review, I receive a strongly negative viewer reaction, accusing me of being shamefully ungrateful and completely lacking the brainpower and life experience to understand the material and the decisions made by product designers?  Why is my opinion so often seen as an effrontery if it isn't 100% positive?

  1. Jang, this is called: "Welcome to the Internet". Haters gonna hate.
I truly appreciate your opinions and your TLJ AT-ST review remains my favorite review ever.

  2. By "strongly negative viewer reaction", do you mean a handful of YouTube comments? There is usually a big difference between a few vocal people and a poll where many more people chip in. (I hardly ever comment on videos, and I think the majority of your viewers are in that camp.)

  3. Honesty pays. I don’t watch videos to see always 100% beautiful things. For me the negative points in a set review are the most important. :)

  4. That's due to a particular finnicky aspect of human nature, only found in more flawed people, who for some reason immediately have to argue when someone presents an opinion. They see it as an affront to their world view and so immediately go onto a hostile push to denigrate and disband the opinion held by someone else. It's fatalistic and flawed and completely absent of any reason or value but these people choose to be this way because they are innately incapable of rational thought and thus exist in a flawed universe within their perception and thus embody the flaws of that universe and seek to make everyone else as flawed or worse. Essentially they're just useless and seek the attention of those who aren't because these types of people are lazy to the core.

  5. I have also noticed that people who leave critical feedback on Lego.com also seem to get shot down (with people leaving lots of thumbs down) and to me this is very immature and ignorant. Your reviews are in my opinion, the best. They are thorough, intelligently and professionally done, and honest. Any time I want a true assessment of a Lego or Playmobil set, I check your websites. Keep up the great work. You are truly appreciated!

  6. You may already know, but the people that enjoys what you said will mostly just watch, while people that disgusts something will write about it for sure.

  7. To be blunt, some of this is also that your target audience is primarily children, tweens etc. They haven't had the time to grow their emotional development and see that some disagreements are productive.

And sometimes people never develop emotionally. Some of those become Youtubers! (Ha ha, great punchline.)

  8. I watch jangbricks reviews because I value your opinion on new lego sets. I trust you to deliver a balanced review and I feel that you always deliver. Thank you Jang.

  9. I regularly view your reviews before I buy a Lego set and I LIKE it when you point out the flaws --especially on the more expensive sets. I may still buy the set (although not always), but at least I know what I am getting. Please note, I am a person who also reads all the one star reviews on Amazon for products I am looking to buy to see if anything would impact my purchase of a product.

Now, that being said, I may not always agree with you, and I specifically disagreed with you on the Women of NASA set, but that really didn't have anything to do with the specifics of the Lego set as it did to your opinion of what you perceived as the "politics" around it. And, once you cross that line, then of course you have to open yourself to differences in opinion as those opinions are based on a person's value system, past experience, and perception of the world.

As others have noted, most of us don't say anything necessarily if we agree with you, but I guess if a simple note that something is a "good review" helps I certainly can do that, although I thought that was kind of the purpose of the thumbs up. I have also cut down on my Lego purchases as well, embarrassingly, I am running out of room for them.

One last note, on a person level, I am always amazed that with everything in the world that people could get passionate about and disagree vehemently with people, that so many channel their energy to post nasty comments on reviews about plastic bricks. So, perhaps it isn't you they are really angry with, but you just are conveniently there to withstand their mis-directed anger at something else.

  10. Jang, I think you could improve your YouTube channel and get substantially more clicks if you were to add more in video links. For example I just watched your train shed video from last year and you mentioned an update in the future it would be great at the end of the video was a link to that update. Or maybe just a link to some other structures in your videos. I know it's a lot of work to go back and add links to those videos but I for one would have kept clicking through had there been some in video links for me to click. Just a suggestion. Love what you do, keep up the great work!
