My all-custom, ~10,000 piece, 48x96, two-story, 17-store enclosed LEGO shopping mall is complete at last! Come on in & check it out!
This project involved piecemeal work spanning three months, which I documented right here on this blog. There was no LDD file or even a pencil sketch; it was built my favorite way, all freestyle, figuring everything out as I went along, completing one whole store at a time.
- Video: LEGO Shopping Mall revealed!
I've compiled an advance list of questions that will be asked & comments that will be made, along with my responses. I'll update this over time.
- When will you post a city update?
- Patience :)
- You should have done [insert anything here] differently.
- Correction: I could have, but I didn't, because I didn't want to :) This mall was My Own Creation and I built it exactly how I wanted to. I strongly encourage all MOC-makers to make their MOCs exactly how they want to, and not how anyone else wants them to.
- You should put a train station in the mall.
- This has been suggested by quite a number of folks. Unfortunately, even the most basic station with a platform long enough to accommodate my small elevated light rail train would have taken up an entire half of the second floor. That's a loss I could never accept. A light rail station will be built across the street.
- Did I see dust/hair/parts gap/imperfection/something out of focus?
- Yup. So, what'd you think of the mall? :)
- I saw you/your camera/something else in the reflection/background.
- Yup. So, what'd you think of the mall? :)
- You should use tiles for all of everything everywhere.
- Unlike most folks, I actually like studded surfaces. They say "I am LEGO." They also use up far fewer parts than tiled surfaces, and allow me to pose minifigures & other things wherever I want, whenever I want. I'm happy with the hybrid setup of this mall, where the walkway areas are primarily tiled for a glossy look, while the stores are studded.
- Will you ever change the mall?
- Almost certainly yes. I consider almost every MOC of mine to be a work in progress. Right now there's not a single thing I want to alter in this mall, but I reserve the right to change that at any time!
- Does it have a name?
- Actually yes! I call it the Atherton Mall. I did not invent the word Atherton, but it has zero significance to me, it does not represent anything to me, and I did not take it from anything. It's just a name.
- When will you post a city update City Update CITY UPDATE?!?!?!!!!!!!
- Patience!?!?!!
- Can I copy that music you used?
- No. It is licensed & paid for. Use without a paid license is quite illegal.
- You are the best LEGO maker in ever in the world!
- That's very kind of many people to say, but it is very factually incorrect :)
Please make a cinema or a theatre

DeleteYep, you've done it. You've outdone yourself, and made your best Moc EVER! The ammount of time, effort, and detail that went into this moc, astounds me! I really appreciate the ammmount of time that went into making the video as well! Thanks again jang, and keep building! :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! That mall is amazing. I especially love the details you manage to put into your shops like the tools section, food shops and hanging up of the clothes. Some of the earlier shops are, as you said, little bit bland and could've done more work but apart from that its nothing short of amazing! Shame you can't put the train station but that's cool.
ReplyDeleteQuestion though, when building, did you just use all parts that you have or did buy more specifically for your model? Also when designing do you make it up as you go along or do you have a detailed plan?
read the description. it answers lots of questions, and no he didnt have a detailed plan.
DeleteDear jang I have been watching you videos and reading your blog waiting for you to do your final video on this mall :(:(:(. ReplyDeleteThe mall is awesome but can you put a restaurant?
ReplyDeleteLoved it - brilliant use of the tiny pieces all the way up to the big pieces... this... inspired me. By the way, the character and personality of the minifigs in your MOCs always makes my day.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant work, at all levels, building, careful editing, relaxing and plotted narration, just wonderful. You are now my top #1 YouTube guy right there on par with Chris Harris drifting everything that is awesome. :)
