LEGO city layout plan & queue (updated May 21, 2019)

The basic plan for my LEGO layout was formulated when I began in 2013.  When I moved to a new house in 2015, I gained some space and added a handful of items to the list.  Any empty space you see in any photo or video is already reserved for future build. Anything that looks incomplete is incomplete, and will eventually be completed to my specs over time.  Any official LEGO-designed structures or vehicles are only stand-ins and will ultimately be replaced by my own custom builds.

With the exception of the isolated underground "Mellemby District" section, this is not a crowd-sourced project.  While I appreciate that many viewers have ideas for how they would do things if New JANG City belonged to them, this is my own personal project, being designed & built by me, in my own home. I do not use viewer suggestions for changes or additions at this time*. The number one, key, core reason for any of this to exist is for me to freely express my own personal creative interests & desires. I do not add, remove, or change anything on request.

Here's how the build queue looks as of the date in the title of the post...

I will include:

  • Metro area (with at least 4 very tall office buildings)
  • Industrial area with factories, etc.
  • Residential neighborhood with custom houses
  • Planetary Defense Force base (above and below ground)
  • Small city maintenance crew yard
  • Pet store
  • Chinese restaurant
  • Dance club
  • Cars, Trucks (passenger and commercial), other normal vehicles you'll find in any city
  • People
  • Trees & plants
  • There will be much more that's not on this list!
  • I do not add to this list on request -- as explained above, this city is all about my own inspiration & creativity.

Already added:

  • One skyscraper (the first of at least 4)
  • Police station (currently awaiting full rebuild)
  • Fire station
  • Shopping mall
  • Small boat marina
  • Zoo (to be rebuilt larger some day)
  • Gas station with car wash and adjacent car repair/service garage
  • Arcade + Ice cream shoppe + Bike shop
  • Musical instrument store + Laser tag arena
  • Rail systems:
    • Two 9V standard-gauge rail loops
    • Two standard-gauge rail yards
    • One locomotive maintenance shop
    • Elevated narrow-gauge rail loop
    • Large passenger train station with elevated rail connector
    • Second mainline passenger train station
    • Second elevated narrow-gauge passenger train stop
  • Underground mining scene with some official sets
  • Stand-ins for residential area
  • Custom small high-end apartment building
  • Cargo harbor including:
    • 2x piers
    • Multiple cargo ships
    • STS container gantry crane
    • 2x rail sidings
    • Level luffer crane (awaiting completion)
    • Small warehousing building
    • Harbor ops/admin building
    • Various vehicles
  • Work in progress, incomplete terrain to house Planetary Defense Force (military base)
  • Start of a small underground dinosaur/prehistoric zone (work in progress)
  • Underground Minecraft overworld & Nether displays
  • Temporary Nexo Knights battle diorama
  • Start of an underground "Mellemby District" area driven by viewer suggestions (the sole section of the room where suggestions are strongly encouraged and acted upon)

I will not include:

  • Airport.  NO AIRPORT, PERIOD!  An airport would ruin the plan for the entire city by taking up an absolutely enormous amount of space (if done to my satisfaction, and everything in my city must be done to my satisfaction).
  • Heliport.  Same as above, just smaller (but equally undesirable)
  • Above-ground parking garage.  Again, tremendous waste of incredibly valuable space (would need the area of at least 4 modular buildings to be even halfway decent).  Maybe an underground one some day, way off in the future?
  • Big ol' bland, basic parking lot. Same as for the parking garage, except even worse since a parking lot is only one level and thus an even worse waste of valuable space that could be used for an entire multi-level commercial building, residence, or at least a park.
  • Super Heroes area
  • Ninjago area
  • Chinatown or Japantown
  • Star Wars area
  • Race track
  • Minecraft End City
  • Sports stadium
  • Certainly countless other things will not be built in my layout.  Stay tuned to this blog and my YouTube channel to see what I do build!

*These unfortunate disclaimers have had to be added in response to increasingly large numbers of increasingly rude viewer demands for additions to & removals from my layout, at worst numbering in the hundreds per day when major updates are posted.  The enthusiasm behind normal, casual suggestions is appreciated, but demands for changes are simply unacceptable.

  1. Considering your love of automobiles and automobile racing, I find your lack of a racetrack disturbing;-) just kidding sir, I love your videos and they have been some of the reason I have gotten back into Lego. Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work!

    1. yea jang, your reviews always help me to decide whether or not i should get it!

    2. I imagine Race Track falls into the Airport category. In order to be done correctly, it would take up a great deal of space.

    3. a street circuit like monaco or singapore would still be possible though

  2. Seems understandable why you wouldn't make any large structures. But would you build these structures if you had a larger space to do so?

  3. Your cityscape reminds me of when I took a field trip to LEGOLAND in Winter Haven, FL. It's just so much to take in and wonderfully overwhelming! Remember, when you can't go out, you go up! "Empire Jang Building" "Towering En-Jang-o" ;-)

  4. I'm looking forwards to the office blocks. I used to look at the City-scapes in Lego catalogues and want, not the sets, but the big buildings someone had constructed for the background.

  5. Hello, Jang. I love your videos and what you do with Legos! I want you to know; I want you to fallow your image for the city. it's YOUR Lego city made with YOUR Legos. I love the things that you make for it, and the way it looks. and I want all of you people, who are bothering Jang about things to put in; stop bothering him about it! if he wants to put something in, then, he will. So if you say it once, and he says no, then DON'T ask again! it's rude, and it's his city.

    1. Why would it be for sale? No offense but it’s pretty obvious that it’s not

  8. A shopping mall near an industrial area. The area where I live has a mall (Rolling Oaks) close to an industrial area. So I respect jang's decision.

  9. A suggestion for the non-inclusion of an airport, in the past there was an airport, but with all the plane crashes they had due to surrounding terrain it was removed and the space taken over by planetary defence forces. Could even have some plane wreckage underwater for the subs etc to explore...

  10. Is there still going to be a area for the Halloween stuff? I'm In the city for a spooky feeling in the city

  11. I like your lego city.

  12. Hey Jang, I just wanted to say you are a huge influence to me, I had a lot of trouble in school until i got back into lego thanks to you and a few others and it's being a great sort of therapy to make crazy life. One thing though, your city doesn't have any manhole covers. Other than that I just wanted to tell you how cool I think you are.

  13. You need to be crowdfunded a larger home... AFOLs rise! :-)

  14. Hey Jang! Will you make a sailboat with fabric sails?

  15. Will you add a metro underpass?

  16. Wow, great plan, now I can imagine what New Jang City will look like in the coming years! I just want to say that you were my inspiration on YouTube and for my own city! I really like the plan! Keep it up!

  17. As a pilot, I'm torn between being bummed and glad that you aren't doing an airport. Bummed that I won't get to see you make one but glad that you aren't going to throw down 3 road plates and call it a runway. To do it right would probably take up your entire layout, and a whole lot of gray tiles. At least I have the laser tag to look forward too, I'm way more excited for that than I thought I would be.

    1. I couldn't agree more. Super disappointed to read that an airport won't be included, but you're exactly right. For me, as a pilot, and for him, as a perfectionist, the only acceptable airport would take up a MASSIVE amount of space. I have been designing a Lego airport for a year now and the runway alone is 21 feet long (and it's still too short for my standards).

  18. I think you've made great progress. Keep up the good work! The city is really starting to come together.

P.S. - Isn't it funny how people are making suggestions in their comments? LOL

  19. I understand alot on your list have you thought of a roundhouse and mabey some more steam locomotives?

  20. How about a public gym, or even a simple outdoor basketball court in the urban area?

    ReplyDelete
  21. lol you have to to a rundown area that is unsightly and has garbage everywhere and has minifies with pistols running around, every city has one

  22. I'm not trying to say anything that I want to be added but I want your opinion of an idea I had. Underneath the marina where the underwater section is, do you think making the table somehow see through and the trans-blue tiles would make a cool effect? I'm thinking of building this soon and want to know how you feel.

  25. Hi! in your zoo (which i love) can you share what pieces you used for the outside of the avairy? (the clear pieces) thanks!

  26. I hope you get a monorail one day, just to see what ideas you come up with.

  27. I'm looking forward to seeing the apartment complex, pet shop, Chinese restaurant and dance club in particular. Was delighted by the apartment you did for another Lego builder's apartment block.

  28. Will you be making an elevator build to the underground Mellemby district (similar to how you made the Minecraft block build that sorta pops up where the Zoo is above ground)? Elevator can be use as an entrace the the underground district as well as the Metro. Would be great if the district was directly connected to your Planetary Defence Force and the Mining area through a Metro underground train line. The Metro can also go directly through the Dinosaur area, idea being loosely inspired by the "Journey to the center of the earth" story, where Dinosaurs survived underground. this can also connect the stationary Trains you have placed bellow as well :)

  29. And any government building? Like a town hall or a stata capitol or something like that?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm pretty disappointed about that there is not going to be a Star Wars area. At least please consider of making a small diorama under the table.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You could build a convention center, put a Comic-Con inside. Use the heroes from DC, Marvel, Star Wars, and Ninjago as cosplay.
Or as props in a movie museum, or a comic book store.
Or as Halloween costumes. Seems like a waste to buy them and promptly put them into a drawer.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jang when you were doing the music shop/Lazer tag building you made some time lapse videos showing your building process. Could you please do more of those in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Love your city. I understand why you're not doing an airport. Though it would be funny to have a sign pointing to one down the street that leads off the table.

    ReplyDelete
  34. man i wish we could have a ninjago layout but what ever jang decides im happy

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's an impressive list, although I would love to see you do a convention centre, hosting something like Comicon. At least then you could use all the superhero and Star Wars minifigs you must have lying around from your reviews!

  36. I imagine the proverbial airport is far from New Jang City.
Y'know, the airport that doesn't exist.

  37. I agree that parking lots are a waste of space. However, we built a gym that was sitting back in the city, so we made the first level a parking garage. This a) allowed us to do something different and b)allowed us to raise up the gym to be more noticeable given it's location. Love what you do Jang!

  38. Do love the new jang city. Been following for years now and love to watch the progress. My son and I love the trains and have HO scale and now Lego trains. I know with HO scale with longer trains we are able to add a few loco's to keep the speed up. With your twin green engines pulling down in corners. Would putting a third engine in line help them keep the speed up in corners?? New to the Lego trains so asking the question to get info on this issue.. thanks and keep those city updates a coming.

  39. What I would really love to see is an underground batcave. You could use one of your skyscapers as Wayne Enterprises and put the batcave under it. But you probably won't do that. Otherwise, the city is fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Also a cool idea would be a custom batmobile driving on the roads.

  42. So you say that you will not put anything like a airport or a racetrack on there to save up space. I can agree with the stuff like the ninjago, the superheros, and even the big, bland parking lot, but what if you had a much bigger space? Like a indoor basketball court size. Then would you make some of those? And also an area were minifigures battle the plastic army men? Not only make other stuff, like expanding you amusement park and your mountain. Then, your city would be mostly complete.
